PHOENIX, Ariz. — Early detection of lung cancer is now a possibility for 100 Phoenix firefighters who have been tested as a result of a grant.
The Professional Fire Fighters of Arizona union received a $50,000 grant from Arizona Public Service to test 100 Phoenix firefighters for lung cancer. According to a press release, the Phoenix firefighters will be the first in Arizona to receive the LuCED test. There are about 3,000 firefighters in Phoenix and 7,000 in the state, according to David Leibowitz, a spokesman for Professional Fire Fighters of Arizona.
Priority for the testing was given to firefighters who had been deployed to Ground Zero in New York on 9/11, the Oklahoma City bombing or the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in Louisiana, Leibowitz said. The remaining tests were provided on a first-come, first-served basis. Some firefighters are on a waiting list in the hope that there will be additional funding for more tests.
