ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Firefighters are mourning the loss of a colleague who lost his battle with job-related cancer.
The Pagosa Springs Sun reported that Farmington Fire Department Lieutenant Shadd Rohwer, 44, died Jan. 11 after being diagnosed with cancer in 2015. It was the same day as his 19th anniversary of service with the department.

Colleagues, as well as members of the Albuquerque and Rio Rancho fire departments, gathered in Albuquerque and participated in a procession that escorted him back to Farmington from a Phoenix hospital, according to KRQE.
Lt. Rohwer was a member of the department’s technical rescue team, wildland team and urban search and rescue, and responded to Hurricane Katrina. He was also a Rescue 3 International instructor.
“Lieutenant Shadd Rohwer was just such a positive person. He was there for everyone in our department,” colleague Travis Robinson said.
“Lt. Rohwer had a contagious smile and a positive attitude every time you were around him. I’ll miss that,” another colleague, Andrew Ebner, said.
Farmington firefighters said that after Rohwer was diagnosed, he became a strong advocate for promoting face mask safety.
