PEMBROKE PINES, Fla. — A 16-year-old with cancer became an honorary firefighter with the Pembroke Pines Fire Rescue Thursday.
David Fray was given the opportunity to explore the inside of a fire rescue truck, learned how to battle flames and was outfitted with his own helmet, turnout gear and radio.
David has been battling leukemia since November of 2015.
“Since fighting the disease, he was kind of down and everything,” Diane Cosentino, David’s aunt, told NBC Miami. “Now, he’s got something positive and he’s feeling the best he’s been in eight months.”
David’s family reached out to the department with the request. His grandfather, a retired chief, pinned his honorary badge during the ceremony. His aunt is also a fire chief, reports CBS Miami.
“I didn’t expect this, it’s a surprise,” David said.
