VALPARAISO, Ind. — Fire Chief David Nondorf, 56, died Monday after a battle with cancer.

“Dave Nondorf was the consummate fire chief,” Mayor Jon Costas said. “He was highly respected all around the state for his dedication to the department and for his progressive leadership.”

Nondorf was diagnosed in 2011 with bone cancer after stepping in a hole and feeling something pop in his knee during a fire call. He underwent three cycles of chemotherapy and the week before Thanksgiving that year he had surgery to remove the front part of his shin. Nondorf seemed to be progressing well until a CAT scan in May of 2012 showed the cancer shifted to his left lung.
