BUFFALO, N.Y. — A teen fire explorer who is being treated for cancer is requesting support from fire departments in the form of T-shirt donations.

WGRZ reported that 16-year-old Timothy Richardson, a member of Hy-View Fire Company’s explorer program, hopes to have enough fire department T-shirts to last him through his month-long hospital stay while he is treated for T-cell leukemia.

“Timmy wants to be able to wear a different fire company’s shirt every day he is in the hospital,” Richardson’s mother, Deana, said on a Facebook page the family created to post updates on his treatment.

Fire departments have begun flooding Richardson with T-shirts since the post was created, and firefighters have visited him in the hospital as well.

“I put the feelers out, town of Hamburg, town of Amherst, West Seneca, anybody that I knew and the outpouring has just been phenomenal,” Hy-View safety officer and explorer advisor Joe Lent said. “I didn’t expect anything less. Timmy’s going to have a lot of shirts to wear.”

“It’s a battle and I’m going to have to go through it,” Richardson said. “I’ve got a lot of support of the brotherhood from the fire department and my family is all pitching in to help. So it really helps. It really does.”
