NIPOMO, Calif. — A little girl has raised $10,000 for firefighter families after hearing about a firefighter who was killed in the Thomas fire.
CNN reported that Faye Segraves, 5, heard about the death of fire engineer Cory Iverson and wanted to help out, especially after hearing he was a father.
Faye, who is the daughter of another firefighter battling the Thomas Fire, started a fund for the Wildland Firefighter Foundation with her $7 in chore money for the “people who lost their daddies in the fire.”
“It was a big fire. I saw video of it,” Faye said. “A daddy on the fire died.”
Faye’s mother, Kylee, contributed to the fund with her tip money from work and it grew to $111. The fund now totals $10,000.
Kylee said the money will help the family of Los Padres National Forest Chief Gary Helming, one of Faye’s father’s bosses, who died in a car crash after fighting the Railroad Fire last summer.
“Faye can hear me on the phone talking about these tragedies, the fires,” Kylee said. “The fire community is close.”
Kylee added that she told Faye bad things happen sometimes, “but we have to focus on good things.”
