HOUSTON — A baby was left Friday morning in front of a southwest Houston fire station, according to a fire department spokesman.

The child, who firefighters estimate to be 1 year old, was left around 9:30 a.m. in a car seat outside of Station 21 on Main Street.

Firefighters came downstairs when they heard the baby, a boy, crying. The baby appeared to be in good health, but was transported to Texas Children’s Hospital.

Houston Police Department and Child Protective Services also responded to the fire station as part of standard protocol.

Parents can leave their child at a designated safe space, as part of the 1999 Baby Moses Law signed off by George W. Bush, then governor of Texas.

Any hospital, fire station, free-standing emergency center or emergency medical service (EMS) station in Texas are considered safe and legal spaces to leave a child, according to Texas Health and Human Services.

The baby left should be 60 days or older and also be handed over to an official who works at the designated safe place.

If a baby is left at a fire station unharmed, then the parents will not be prosecuted for abandonment or neglect.
