SHAKER HEIGHTS, Ohio — A group of firefighters rescued two children from quicksand-like mudflats.
WHNT reported that the firefighters responded after the children had become stuck in mudflats at Horseshoe Lake that became exposed when the water levels were lowered by three feet.
The crew used ropes to rescue a girl, 10, who had become stuck after venturing 15 feet from shore, and distributed weight with plywood to reach a boy, 7, who had ventured out 60 feet.
“We’ve practiced for it. We had everything we needed,” Chief Patrick Sweeney said. “These kids, they stayed calm, which really helped us out a lot. Didn’t make the situation more stressful.”
Sweeney urged parents to be cautious of the mudflats.
“Parents really need to keep an eye on their kids and know that we’ve got this situation going on right now,” he said. “It’ll really suck you in there, so you could just find yourself in a situation where you can’t move, you can’t go anywhere.”
