NEWARK, Calif. — A breed of dog that historically has been a mascot of fire houses saved the day Thursday afternoon when it alerted its owner to a house fire here.
Bella, a 10-year-old Dalmatian, sounded the alarm -- figuratively speaking -- when the washing machine in a home in the 37000 block of Starflower Street caught fire, filling the garage with brown smoke.
The homeowner called 911 and firefighters responded at 4:51 p.m., quickly putting out the fire, which was contained to the garage.
