COLUMBIA, Mo. — The University of Missouri will pay $750,000 to settle claims from the death of Columbia Fire Department Lt. Bruce Britt.

Columbia Tribune reported that Lt. Britt died after a concrete walkway collapsed in 2014. The settlement will be split into three parts, which includes the purchase of an annuity for Lt. Britt’s daughter.

The university is now free from all liability as part of the settlement.

In the lawsuit filed in 2014, Lt. Britt’s wife claimed the university was responsible for her husband’s death because they failed to “properly maintain and/or construct the University Village Apartments.”

Lt. Britt’s wife also agreed to refrain from speaking with the public about the settlement.
