Maine fire officials frustrated by communications issues

Town law enforcement are sometimes dispatched to accident scenes while fire and rescue workers may not be

SIDNEY, Maine — Sidney’s fire and rescue workers told Rep. Bob Nutting, R-Oakland, Tuesday night they’re concerned about the emergency communications network they use.

Sidney Fire Capt. Kevin Bacon expressed frustration that sheriff’s deputies or state police are sometimes dispatched to Sidney accident scenes, while the town’s fire and rescue workers may not be. He said that, if only vehicle damage is reported, fire and rescue personnel are no longer dispatched.

Fire Chief Richard Jandreau said they’d rather get dispatched and find no injuries, than have someone die because no rescue personnel were there.

Nutting said he was aware there were problems in smaller communities without their own police departments and that several pieces of legislation are currently in the works.

“I’ll find out,” Nutting said.
