CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. — The Franklin County Emergency Services Department is testing its new 911 dispatch system.

Fire monitors have been picking up phrases such as “the wide road shimmered in the hot sun.”

The non-emergency language is so no one mistakes the tests for the real thing, according to county 911 coordinator Bryan Stevenson. Testers can verify the clarity of speech through the thousand phrases.

Three crews are going to predetermined points on a grid throughout the county to validate the system. They are out from sunrise to sunset.

Testing started Thursday and is to conclude before Thanksgiving, according to Stevenson.

A date has not been scheduled for activating the system intended to remove dead spots in dispatch coverage and to allow different agencies to communicate directly with each other at the scene of an emergency.
