NAPLES, Fla. — A Florida firefighter has died due to COVID-19.

Naples Fire-Rescue Department Firefighter Anthony “Tony” Christensen, who served with the department for more than 22 years, died Tuesday “after battling Covid-19 for more than 30 days,” the department wrote in a press release.

Christensen had won many lifesaving awards over the course of his career, according to the department.

Several local public safety agencies expressed their condolences on social media.

“As a City of Naples First Responder, Tony was as much a member of the NPD family as any police officer,” the Naples Police Department posted. “His loss will be felt throughout the entire First Responder community.”

Charlotte County Fire and EMS wrote that its crews were “honored to stand watch” over a procession escorting Christensen home Tuesday night, along with several other public safety agencies.
