Fire-Rescue Med 2006 offers new courses, programs

By KEN RIDDLE

By now you should have received the brochure for the EMS Section’s Fire-Rescue Med conference scheduled for April 24–26, in Las Vegas, NV. This year’s program is packed full of useful topics for leaders of fire-based EMS programs. We have moved back to a Monday start for the main conference, and will conclude Wednesday at 11:00 am.

Pre-conference sessions will be held on Saturday and Sunday, and will include two new programs — the Cyanide Detection and Treatment Instructor Course and a Lifting and Moving Patients Instructor Course. All participants who complete these sessions will be certified as instructors at the sessions’ end.

Also featured this year will be a partners program for guests of attendees. This new program offers educational activities and exercise classes, as well as some fun and laughs. The EMS Section developed this program based on feedback from previous Fire-Rescue Med attendees. Bring your partner and sign them up for this engaging three-day program.

The regular conference program will offer 20 workshops and six general sessions to choose from, as well as a sunrise session for those who like to get up early. As in the past, breakout sessions will cover topics that can be applied to your fire-based EMS system.

The closing general session on Wednesday promises to be entertaining as well as educational. Featured speakers, Dr. Henry Lee and Chief Dennis Smith, are not only leaders in their fields, but are accomplished authors as well — Lee has written three books and Smith has written 13. We have made arrangements with Barnes and Noble to sell some of their books at the session, and both authors have agreed to sign copies for Fire-Rescue Med attendees. More information will be provided in the near future as to what titles will be available. So save some money for this once in a lifetime event.

The EMS Section is looking forward to seeing you again in Las Vegas. For more information or to register for the Fire-Rescue Med conference, visit www.iafc.org/frm, or call 800/934-1957; 703/449-6418.
