GARRETT COUNTY, Md. — A dozen members of the Anne Arundel County Fire Department are joining two firefighters from Annapolis in helping out in Garrett County.

The firefighters are part of a multijurisdictional EMS Strike Team helping with relief efforts in far western Maryland, which was hit with a blizzard this week, according to the Maryland Emergency Management Agency.

Seven of the county firefighters are based at the Jones Station fire station in Arnold and the other five are from stations around the county, said Division Chief Michael Cox, a department spokesman.

The firefighters have urban search and rescue training and will help check the well-being of Garrett residents.

More than 2 feet of wet snow was dumped on Garrett County, downing power lines, felling trees and making roads impassible.

As of Friday afternoon, more than 10,000 Garrett homes — 47 percent — were still without power, according to the Maryland Emergency Management Agency.
