DELMONT, S.D. — The Delmont Volunteer Fire Department has cobbled together the equipment needed to keep its community safe since a Mother’s Day tornado destroyed the new fire hall.
A donation made Monday night at the monthly fire department meeting, however, will mean that the 21 firefighters no longer have to squeeze into second-hand pants, coats and gloves that are either too large or too small. State Fire Marshall Paul Merriman presented a gold coin to the firefighters on Monday, serving as the go-between for a Sioux Falls couple who donated it anonymously in the tornado’s aftermath.
In a letter that accompanied the coin, which was dropped off at the Argus Leader, the donors talked about the devastation they had witnessed through photographs. The tornado destroyed several community buildings, including a historic church and multiple homes.
