Jarad McCargo, 36, was found hiding behind garbage cans in a neighbor’s yard after he fled the scene

LEXINGTON, Ky. — A Lexington firefighter charged in a hit-and-run accident outside the Beer Trappe on Friday night was found hiding behind garbage cans in a neighbor’s yard after he fled the scene, according to police and court documents.

Jarad McCargo, 36, of 3179 Yellowstone Parkway, “readily admitted” to wrecking and fleeing, the police citation says. He also agreed to have his blood drawn.

A man sitting outside the bar was taken to UK Hospital with critical injuries, including fractures of his femur, pelvis, left scapula and a tear in his right femoral artery, according to the police citation. His name has not yet been released.

Court documents show that McCargo has now been charged with DUI, leaving the scene of an accident, first degree assault and driving without insurance. He will be arraigned on Monday.

Police say the accident happened at 11:03 p.m. Friday when McCargo, who was driving a Ford Expedition, backed over the curb at a high rate of speed, striking a man who was sitting at a café table in front of The Beer Trappe at 811 Euclid Avenue. He then drove into the front of the building.

Police found him in his neighbor’s yard and then took him in for questioning and charged him.

A passenger, an employee of the Fayette County Sheriff’s office, jumped out of McCargo’s car as he was driving off and suffered minor injuries. Police said the passenger then returned to the scene.

Onlookers gave multiple accounts of what happened. Courtney Campbell, an eyewitness and a friend of McCargo and the passenger, said the couple were having a date night.

Public Safety Commissioner Clay Mason said McCargo has been placed on administrative leave, but he declined further comment.

McCargo was being held at the Fayette County Detention Center on a $13,050 bond.
