WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. — An off-duty White Plains firefighter has pleaded guilty to vehicular homicide and other charges for an alcohol and drug-fueled wrong-way crash that killed a newspaper delivery driver.
Westchester prosecutors say Friday Erik Refvik was also convicted of manslaughter, vehicular assault, driving while intoxicated, reckless driving and drug possession charges.
The November 2014 crash caused the death of 47-year-old Reyda La Madrid and seriously injured the car’s driver, Edgar Lopez.
Prosecutors say Refvik was driving 65 mph when he crashed into their car that was stopped at a red light. Authorities allege Refvik’s blood-alcohol content was 0.21 percent, more than 2 1/2 times the legal limit.
They say he also used cocaine, bath salts and anti-anxiety pills. His attorney told The Journal News Refvik wanted to accept responsibility.
