OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. — The former chief of the Higgins Volunteer Fire Department has been charged with embezzlement.

In an indictment Thursday, the state’s multicounty grand jury alleged Curtis Gregory Baker embezzled more than $1,000 from the fire department “for his own personal enrichment” over a two-year period.

The grand jurors met for three days this month in Oklahoma City. Baker, 48, of Hartshorne, denied the felony charge. “No, I didn’t,” he said when reached by phone Thursday evening.

Baker disbanded the fire department in southeast Oklahoma early in 2013.
