SFFD evacuates public as concrete slab threatens to fall from high-rise

Evacuations were ordered late Wednesday afternoon after the slab became loose on the 30th floor of the apartment building

SAN FRANCISCO — Firefighters are evacuating several buildings and the public a sa massive concrete slab threatens to fall from a high-rise under construction .

Evacuations were ordered late Wednesday afternoon after the slab became loose on the 30th floor of the apartment building, which has been under construction since 2015. Firefighters and police officers are walking floor-to-floor to evaucate nearby buildings.

“This is a fluid incident. We want to make sure that everybody’s safe,” SFFD PIO Jonathan Baxter said during a press conference. “Currently, there are no injuries to civilians or fire department staff.”

A specialist is being flown in to evaluate the situation. The incident occurred as commute peak hours began in the city.

The slab weighs around 2,000 pounds, tweeted the San Francisco Fire Department.
