SCHENECTADY, N.Y. — State officials say three people have been injured in an explosion and fire at an asphalt plant along the Mohawk River in Schenectady.

The Department of Environmental Conservation says a mix of asphalt and kerosene was being loaded into a tanker truck when vapors ignited Monday afternoon. Firefighters hosed down the fire at Mohawk Asphalt Emulsions as a column of black smoke rose into the air.

DEC says three people were transported to an area hospital.

The agency says all runoff was contained to the site and there was no impact to the Mohawk River or surrounding areas.

The plant, owned by the Gorman Group, makes a variety of paving and construction products.
