IRVINE, Calif. — A crash involving at least nine vehicles on I-405 sent three people to the hospital and killed a dog Saturday, authorities said.
The northbound I-405 was closed for about a half-hour starting 8:34a.m. after the series of collisions occurred in wet weather. The vehicles included a big-rig that jackknifed and a California Highway Patrol car.
CHP Officer Steve Tillmann said he was unsure what led to the crash and whether the wet weather was a factor.
Four people were injured.
A woman and a girl were trapped and had to be cut out of one vehicle, said Capt. Greg McKeown of the Orange County Fire Authority. The two were in critical condition and taken to Western Medical Center-Santa Ana.
A dog died in the same vehicle, McKeown said.
A man was partially thrown from another vehicle, McKeown said. He was in critical condition and was taken to UCI Medical Center in Orange.
In another vehicle, a woman had minor injuries.
