CHICAGO — Northbound traffic on Route 53 was completely shut down during rush hour Tuesday as emergency crews responded to a crash near Palatine, officials said.

The Palatine Fire Department and Illinois State Police responded at about 4:45 p.m. to the two-car crash in the northbound lanes of Route 53 between Rand and Palatine roads, officials said.

One person was extricated from a vehicle that flipped over and was transported to Northwest Community Hospital with nonlife-threatening injuries, a fire department official said.

A person in the second vehicle also was transported to Northwest Community with nonlife-threatening injuries.

All four lanes of traffic were shut down for about 25 minutes, but two lanes had been reopened as of 5:15 p.m.
