LEAF RIVER, Ill. — A firefighter died Friday after a fire engulfed his family home.
RR Star reported that Leaf River Fire Department firefighter Gregory Wood, 19, was found on the second floor of his family’s home after crews extinguished a blaze that engulfed the house, according to the sheriff’s office.
Wood’s father, mother and brother all escaped from the fire. Saukvalley.com reported that his father, Deputy Fire Chief Marcus Wood, is being teated in a burn unit. Wood’s mother, Nicole, who is an EMT at the department, was treated at the hospital and released.
Deputy Fire Chief Jeremy Glick said the family was sleeping when “they got up and there was smoke throughout the whole house.”
Chief Glick said Wood was part of the original group of fire cadets in the department and became a firefighter over a year ago.
“It’s just like a member of our family passing,” he said. “We’ve never experienced this this close. We’re grieving the loss of one of our own.”
