MARIETTA, Ga. — The body of a firefighter killed by a suspected drunk driver was escorted home Saturday.

11alive.com reported that fellow firefighters escorted Ron Herens, 23, who was killed while on vacation in Los Angeles, back to the city in a procession.

“Ron Herens was the finest young man you could ever meet,” Chief Jackie Gibbs said. “He was just a bright spot in our department. He had a great sense of humor and loved his job.”

A celebration of life will take place at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Trinity Chapel; he will be buried at Cheatham Hill Memorial Park.

“We’re just at a complete loss for having a young man taken away from us that had so much to give to the fire service,” Chief Gibbs said.

Two other firefighters were in the car with Herens at the time of the crash. Firefighter Dillon Guest was released from the hospital last week and firefighter Doug Blanchard’s condition is unknown.
