CHICOPEE, Mass. — A firefighter who collapsed and died while exercising March 30 was laid to rest Wednesday.

MassLive.com reported that more than 400 firefighters gathered to honor Anthony Spano, 47, who worked as a Chicopee firefighter and EMT for 14 years. Spano had just gotten off a 24-hour shift when the incident occurred. He leaves behind a son, father, two sisters and his former wife.

A funeral procession of firefighters, police officers, family and friends stopped at the fire department headquarters for a memorial presentation.

“We lost a good firefighter in Chicopee, a young man who was on the job,” city councilor Frank Laflamme said.
