FARMLAND, Ind. — One volunteer firefighter was killed and another was left in critical condition in an early morning vehicle crash in Indiana, officials said.
Kyle Osgood, 29, was driving a tanker truck en route to a barn fire around 6:30 a.m. on May 25 when the vehicle rolled over while approaching a curve, according to a news release from the state Department of Homeland Security.
The tanker landed on top of Osgood, an assistant chief with the Farmland Volunteer Fire Department, killing him, officials said.
A 19-year-old firefighter, the vehicle’s sole passenger, sustained major injuries to his legs and was flown in critical condition to a hospital in Fort Wayne for emergency surgery. His current condition is unknown.
“Osgood and his family have a rich tradition in the Farmland Volunteer Fire Department, with his grandfather previously serving as fire chief,” officials said. “A fellow firefighter said Osgood had been coming to the fire station since he was a child and rose through the ranks as he stayed committed to protecting his community.”
He was a husband, father and employee of Culy Contracting, a general contractor in Winchester, according to a statement from the company.
“Kyle was a great, hardworking employee and an overall nice guy and will be greatly missed,” the company said.
State police are investigating the crash, according to a news release from the Randolph County HSEM.
“Our prayers are with the families of those affected by this tragedy, which has shaken our entire community on many levels,” a neighboring town’s fire department, which was dispatched to the same barn fire, said in a news release.
Farmland is about 75 miles northeast of Indianapolis.
