BROOKSTON, Ind. — A volunteer fire chief died Tuesday from a heart attack after extinguishing a fire.
Brookston Prairie Twownship Fire Chief Michael Payne, 58, responded to a highway truck fire, and collapsed after the fire was extinguished. Responders performed CPR before the chief was transported to the hospital, where he died.
Chief Payne served the department for over 25 years, reported Firefighter Close Calls. He leaves behind a daughter. Funeral services are pending.
