LODD: Ohio firefighter struck, killed at crash scene

AUSTINBURG TOWNSHIP, Ohio — A firefighter died Friday after he was struck by a vehicle.

Star Beacon reported that firefighter Dave Lemponen, 83, a 60-year veteran with the Austinburg Volunteer Fire Department, was directing traffic at the scene of a crash near an intersection Thursday night. Lemponen, who was directing traffic from the north side, was struck by a car traveling westbound.

Lemponen was flown to a hospital, where he died the next day.

An investigation is underway; funeral arrangements have not yet been announced.
