SPARKS, Nev. — Friends, family and colleagues mourned the death of the city’s longest serving fire chief.

Sparks Fire Chief Francis William “Bill” Farr, 93, died Saturday; he served as chief from 1951 to 1976.

“Bill Farr was the epitome of a public servant holding many titles throughout his life,” Sparks Mayor Geno Martini said.

Chief Farr was known for his commitment to the fire service and for his integrity; he also served in the Army during WWII.

“Although I only had the pleasure of meeting Chief Farr a few times, he was legendary,” current Chief Chris Maples said. “Stories of his time as chief were told in the engine room and around the dinner table. He was an inspiration to all of us … He truly was a member of America’s greatest generation.”
