MCCORDSVILLE, Ind. — After a firefighter died Christmas Eve while on the way to his fire station, his family reflected on his passion and dedication to serve.

McCordsville firefighter Richard Rehm, 55, was struck by a train when his vehicle became stuck at a railroad crossing, reported FOX59. He was on his way to the fire station to respond to a call.

Rehm called 911, but was struck by the train before help arrived.

According to Rehm’s son, Jacob, his father inspired him and his cousin to become volunteer firefighters.

“It was great. We’d always go out on runs together,” Rehm said. “We are both going to keep doing it and [following his death] it definitely has more meaning.”

The 16-year veteran was also involved in the community, and served as an educator at schools on fire safety.

“I think that was one of his favorite things to do,” Rehm said. “He always talked about it and then once he got me to do it with him I think that was even better.”

During his time off, Rehm said his father enjoyed going fishing and watching sports.

Funeral arrangements are still being organized.
