Toronto fire captain dies in snowmobile crash

Capt. Earl Strong was found by a search crew after falling through a frozen lake

TORONTO — An off-duty fire captain died Saturday after falling through a frozen lake while riding a snowmobile.

CP24 reported that Toronto Fire Services Captain Earl Strong was found the day after the incident by a search crew, consisting of a helicopter and underwater unit, after falling through Sturgeon Lake on a snowmobile.

Another man that was involved in the incident was transported to the hospital with serious injuries.

“Our sincere condolences to friends and family of active member Acting Capt. Earl Strong who died tragically on Jan. 20 while off-duty. In our hearts and minds,” Toronto Fire Services said in a tweet.

“His co-workers are devastated. He was extremely popular and well-liked,” Toronto Professional Firefighters’ Association President Frank Ramagnano said. “We have a lot of very upset members right now.”

The incident is currently under investigation.
