BALTIMORE — Three Baltimore firefighters who died in a house fire in January were honored at an Earth Day event where a tree was planted in their memory.

Mayor Brandon Scott was joined by Baltimore City Fire Department Chief Niles Ford, along with students from Baltimore City Public Schools, the director of Baltimore City Department of Public Works (DPW) and other volunteers, to plant the tree in a garden at Harlem Park Elementary/Middle School in memory of Lt. Paul Butrim, Lt. Kelsey Sadler and Kenny Lacayo.

As reported by WJZ, Baltimore City’s DPW collaborated with Harlem Park Elementary/Middle School and Bluford Drew Jemison STEM Academy School on the Earth Day festivities. Participating residents received stormwater credits toward their water bills, while Harlem Park Elementary/Middle School and Bluford Drew Jemison STEM Academy School students earned learning hours.

“The garden is an expression of appreciation for their dedication to protecting our residents,” Scott said of the fallen firefighters, who were killed on Jan. 24.
