CHARLESTON, S.C. — Ten years ago, nine firefighters lost their lives while battling the Sofa Super Store fire.
Every day until June 18, the Charleston Fire Department will pay tribute to a firefighter killed in the blaze. Each tribute, which is shown on the department’s Facebook page, is written by a member of the department.
The firefighters, who died on June 18, 2007, died 30 minutes after responding to the call.
Four days later, a memorial was held with 30,000 people in attendance. The incident was the greatest single loss of firefighters since 9/11.
“As they entered that building, they walked into the pages of history of our community,” then-Charleston Mayor Joe Riley said.
