MIDDLETOWN, Conn. — Two firefighters were injured Monday while trying to save a resident from a house fire.
NBC Connecticut reported that South Fire District firefighters responded to a call placed by a neighbor who reported smoke coming from the house. Crews entered the home and found a male resident inside.
Chief Michael Howley said the two firefighters were trying to pull the man from the home when they fell through the floor.
“They had found him, and they were trying to take that victim out when they fell through the floor,” Chief Howley said.
The firefighters were rescued by colleagues and transported to the hospital. One firefighter who fell through the floor completely into the basement is still in the hospital but is expected to be OK. The other firefighter who fell partially through the floor has since been released.
The resident of the home was pronounced dead by paramedics on the scene.
The fire is currently under investigation.
