SPRING CREEK, N.C. — A 26-year-old who had only three months ago returned from serving in the Army to be with family in this Madison County community was killed in a crash Thursday evening.
Billy Naillon, who served tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan as a specialist, was going southbound on N.C. 209 around 5 p.m. when his vehicle traveled off the right side, returned to the roadway, then traveled off the roadway again, going down the embankment and overturning once, said N.C. Highway Patrol Sgt. Mike Henley. Naillon was partially ejected from the vehicle and pronounced deceased on the scene. He was not wearing a seat beat, Henley said.
“Our belief is that speed was the biggest contributing factor,” Henley said. There’s no indication alcohol was a factor. The stretch of road is rural and curvy, but not particularly treacherous.
