MAYER, Minn. — A fire captain died suddenly Tuesday after a training session.
USFA reported that Mayer Fire and Rescue Captain Jeffrey Vollmer was participating in a non-routine strenuous training session at the local community center before returning home, where he died of an apparent cardiac arrest.
The 12-year veteran of the department was described as a passionate and committed firefighter.
“He was that guy,” fellow firefighter Daniel Martin told KSTP. “He didn’t care how many years of service you had. He put all that kind of stuff aside and just looked at you as a person.”
Martin said Vollmer’s death comes as a shock to the entire department.
“Anytime someone passes away, it’s hard and it’s a shock,” Martin said. “But just because of the kind of person that Jeff was, what he meant to our department, it makes it even harder. You just wonder why him.”
Vollmer leaves behind his wife and two daughters.
