NEW MADRID COUNTY, Mo. — Volunteer assistant chief Todd Hartlein suffered a fatal medical emergency Wednesday after responding to a vehicle crash.

Hartlein, 49, was a volunteer firefighter with the city of Matthews, a small town of about 650 people.

In honor of Hartlein, Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon ordered flags at all state government buildings in the county be flown at half-staff Aug. 27, which is when funeral processions will be held, reported WAVE5.

He is survived by his fiancee, daughter and step-son, according to Ponder Funeral Home.
