LODD: NY firefighter dies in his sleep after cliff rescue

HERKIMER, N.Y. — A firefighter died in his sleep Tuesday after returning home from a technical rescue call.

The U.S. Fire Administration announced that East Herkimer Fire Department firefighter and safety officer Robert Fitch, 60, helped a rescue crew save someone who was stuck on some cliffs after trying to rescue a pet. He returned home after the call and died in his sleep.

“A truly dedicated and loyal man, he will be sorely missed by all who had the fortunate experience of knowing him,” firefighter Daniel Enea said.
