Suspected DUI driver in custody for killing Ga. firefighter

Witnesses said Benjamin Albert Seider ran a red light at 80 to 100 mph when the crash occurred

LOS ANGELES — A suspected drunken driver, who police said struck a vehicle with three Georgia firefighters on board, killing one and injuring two others, is being held in jail on bond.

Daily Breeze reported that the three-vehicle collision occurred at 10 p.m. Monday at an intersection. Firefighter Ron Herens, 23, who was ejected from the vehicle, died at the scene. The other two firefighters were taken to the hospital; one was treated for a possible broken collarbone and hip and the other for lacerations suffered in the crash.

The driver, 23-year-old Benjamin Albert Seider, was taken into custody on suspicion of driving while intoxicated.

Witnesses at the scene said Seider ran a red light at 80 to 100 mph when he crashed into the firefighters’ vehicle, according to the report.

The firefighters were visiting from Georgia on vacation in the Los Angeles area.
