POULSBO, Wash. — A volunteer firefighter died Sunday after being hit by a car during a bicycle ride.

Komo News reported that Joe Vlach, 77, was training for a Seattle to Portland bike ride when he apparently failed to yield at a stop sign and was hit by a vehicle, according to police.

Vlach volunteered for the Poulsbo Fire Department for 33 years. He also served in the Gulf War and was a member of the U.S. Coast Guard.

“Gonna be a huge hole to fill, and I don’t know how we’re going to do it,” Battalion Chief Kurt Krech said.

The incident is still under investigation.
