SPOKANE, Wash. — A firefighter was severely injured Wednesday during an apartment fire that left two residents dead.

Officials said the 29-year-old firefighter was listed in serious condition after suffering second- and third-degree burns. He is a probationary firefighter and is a few weeks away from becoming a full-time firefighter, reported FOX 28.

Firefighters found two victims on the second floor of the apartment they believed they could save.

“In this case they thought they had a savable life. They risked their lives, that’s their profession,” Spokane Assistant Fire Chief Brian Schaeffer told KREM.

Although the identify of the injured firefighter has not been released, officials said he was in good spirits.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
