NEW YORK — The FDNY is under fire for restarting its program to fast-track minorities through a cadet program to become firefighters.

NY Post reported that the department plans to recruit up to 100 men and women ages 20 to 27 citywide. The cadets would work in paid internships up to 20 hours a week during the two-year program. During the internships, they would get physical training, educational courses and mentoring.

After passing an exam, the cadets would get first choice at firefighter openings, according to the report — it’s the same priority given to those working in EMS who pass the firefighter exam. The program requires a high school diploma or GED.

The United Firefighters Association disagrees with the program, saying candidates would be “handpicked,” according to the report.

Civil rights groups said the program will increase diversity in the FDNY.
