MESA, Ariz. — For the first time in the department’s history, the Mesa Fire and Medical Department hired its first female fire chief this week.

Mary Cameli officially took office Thursday, although she has acted as interim chief since Oct. 3, reported ABC. Cameli, a 33-year veteran, is one of the department’s first female firefighters.

“Mary has shown tremendous leadership ability, not only in her short time as interim chief, but in numerous assignments,” city manager Chris Bradley said. “She has well-established relationships with the rank-and-file members, other city department and community groups and is dedicated to our mission to serve the community.”

Cameli aims to tackle the high volume of calls the department receives — a number that increases every year. She plans to use funds from the $12 million grant the department received to do so, reported AZ Central.

During the announcement, Cameli said she was “truly humbled” and thankful for the support.

“I tell my daughters: You strive for whatever you want and work hard … Nothing comes easy,” she said.

Cameli will replace Chief Harry Beck, who has been in the fire service for over 40 years.

Cameli’s husband and brother are both retired firefighters.
