PENNSAUKEN, N.J. — Two firefighters suffered minor injuries while battling a blaze at a commercial building in Pennsauken Saturday afternoon, authorities said.
The firefighters, whose identities were not released, were taken to Cooper University Hospital, a Camden County dispatcher said.
The blaze at 825 Hylton Road was reported at 1:10 p.m. and was put under control half an hour later.
The dispatcher said roofing materials had caught on fire. The cause was under investigation.
Pennsauken Fire Chief Joseph Palumbo said there was fire and smoke coming from the roof of the approximately 100-by-250-foot building when crews arrived. The fire was confined to the roof, with about a third of it ablaze, he said.
CBS3 reported that the chief said the material was left by roofers, who were not present when the fire started.
The location of the fire most recently was home to a company called Innovairre Communications, which helps nonprofits with fund-raising, according to its website.
Mark Schulhof, the company’s chief executive, said Saturday that Innovairre left the building when its lease expired Tuesday.
The property is owned and operated by a company called Opex, he said.
“They have been the owner of the building for the last 4 months,” Schulhof wrote in an email, “and had been in the process of upgrading and renovating the entire building including the roof.”
A woman who answered the phone at Opex, a Moorestown-based mailroom and document-services company, said no one was in the office and she had no information.
Palumbo said the Pennsauken fire marshal is investigating the fire.
