WEST HOMESTEAD, Pa. — A pair of firefighters were injured in a crash while en route to a fire in West Homestead, and the fire chief suffered from smoke inhalation, fire officials said.
The two Munhall firefighters were in a squad vehicle heading to assist firefighters in the 1200 block of Cascade Drive when they were involved in a crash, said Dave Harhai, assistant chief of the West Homestead Volunteer Fire Department. The blaze was reported just before 4 p.m.
West Homestead fire Chief John Dindak, who lives nearby and was first on scene, suffered from smoke inhalation when he entered the home and tried to save the family’s three dogs. He was able to rescue one.
The three were taken to UPMC Mercy and were expected to be released Sunday night. Assistant Chief Harhai didn’t know how the crash involving the Munhall firefighters occurred. Officials there could not be reached.
The fire was contained to the basement and is under investigation by the Allegheny County fire marshal’s office.
