LONDONDERRY, N.H. — A family friend says a woman and her adult daughter died following an early-morning house fire in Londonderry, N.H.

Fire Chief Kevin MacCaffrie said the fire was reported about 4:20 a.m. yesterday by someone inside. Two bodies were recovered.

There were six people in the house when the fire broke out. Four made it out and were treated for smoke inhalation.

Family friend Lisa Whittemore said Frances and Rebecca Gehling died in the fire. Tax records show that Frances and John Gehling owned the house since June 1986.

MacCaffrie said that when firefighters arrived, two floors were in flames and firefighters tried to hold a staircase as an escape route. But the intensity of the fire prevented it.

The fire leveled the colonial-style home.
