2 SF firefighters injured in backdraft

120 firefighters battled the fire, encountered explosion

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif — Firefighters tackling a four-alarm fire in San Francisco narrowly escaped serious injury during a backdraft.

It took 120 firefighters about an hour to extinguish the fast-moving flames that quickly consumed a block of tightly-packed businesses Tuesday.

KGO-TV reported that nine firefighters entered a coffee shop that was believed to be the origin of the fire when they were hit by the backdraft.

One of the firefighters sustained a shoulder injury while the other reported an irregular heartbeat after the explosion. Both were taken to the hospital and expected to make a full recovery.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
