BRUSSELS — Belgian police say two Irish university students have died in a dormitory fire.

Leuven police spokesman Marc Vranckx said eight other students who were in the building when the fire broke out early Friday escaped the flames and appeared not to be injured.

Vranckx said the two female students whose bodies were recovered by firefighters were Irish citizens of Polish and Estonian background.

Police did not release the victims’ names in line with Belgian privacy laws. The students in the dormitory in Leuven, some 30 kilometers (18 miles) east of Brussels, were aged between 19 and 24.

Vranckx said the investigation to determine the cause of the blaze is underway.
