More than 20 fire trucks and 100 firefighters responded

TORONTO — Two firefighters were taken to hospital with minor injuries following a four-alarm fire in 23-storey Scarborough highrise Sunday.

More than 20 fire trucks and 100 firefighters responded to the call at 100 Echo Point, near Warden Ave. and Finch Ave. E., which started around 10 a.m. as a two-alarm blaze but escalated when two firefighters were temporarily lost in the smoke, said Toronto Fire Capt. Mike Strapko.

A family with three young children was in the penthouse apartment when the fire started but was able to escape unharmed when the fire broke out after a pan of oil left unattended on the stove ignited, Strapko said. Toronto Fire estimates the blaze caused about $100,000 worth of damage.
